Alhamdulillah, all praise be to Almighty Allah, the most gracious and the most merciful, who has blessed us with the opportunity and ability to compile this Monograph.

The Book serves as a monument to the resilience and adaptability of the inhabitants living on the char, which are riverine islands resulting from the accumulation of silt carried by the formidable rivers of Bangladesh. The islands exhibit a notable degree of fertility and resource abundance, although they are also susceptible to many natural calamities like as floods, erosion, and other related events, which are often intensified by the influence of climate change.

This Book endeavors to provide a full comprehension of the intricacies of life on the chars by means of meticulous research, personal anecdotes, and evocative images. This study explores the measures used by communities to mitigate the persistent risk of floods, examines the underlying social dynamics, and investigates the involvement of governmental and non-governmental groups in providing assistance to the inhabitants of affected areas.

The focus of our expedition leads us to the central region of these islands characterized by rivers, where we directly see the challenges and accomplishments experienced by the inhabitants living in this area. Through the act of sharing their narratives, our intention is to make a valuable contribution to the continuous discourse around climate change, vulnerability, and resilience. Ultimately, our aim is to cultivate a sharp comprehension and empathy towards the inhabitants of char areas, so fostering a deeper appreciation for their unique way of life.

As the pages are turned, we extend an invitation to fully engage in the realm of Bangladesh’s riverine islands, to acquire knowledge from the perspectives of its residents, and to contemplate the wider consequences of their narratives for our global society. By undertaking this endeavor, our aim is to motivate individuals to take action and make valuable contributions towards the establishment of a future that is both resilience and sustainable for the whole population.

Last but not least, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to our families, friends, and colleagues, whose unwavering support and encouragement have been of immense value during the course of our endeavor. We express our profound gratitude to the funding organizations (Hohai University, China, and The Government of the Peoples’ Republic of China) and publishers that recognized the significance of this research and contributed to its successful completion. The contributions provided by the user have played a crucial role in the realization of this Monograph, and as a result, we express our profound gratitude.
